Rules for Helsinki Hopping outdoor board game

The purpose of the game is to visit different parts of Helsinki by throwing the dice and hopping on the board. Players themselves act as pawns. Everyone chooses their starting point but the places you will visit are thrown by rolling the dice twice. The first throw indicates the first number of the visited place and the second the latter.

You can stop short at the places you are aiming at. The public transport can only be used to one direction during one turn. The winner of the game is the one who first visits five places and then reaches Teurastamo. Stopping short at Teurastamo is not allowed. Players move on the board by rolling one dice. You can download a dice app from your phone’s app store. 

  • Location rules
    • 1.1. Lauttasaari: You miss the metro. You’re not allowed to play for two minutes.
    • 1.2. Jätkäsaari: You go on a cruise for two turns.
    • 1.3. Hernesaari: Spend some time in a sauna and swim until you throw a six on your turn.
    • 1.4. Punavuori: You make the thrift store find of a life time and you want to show it to your friends. Move seven steps forward.
    • 1.5. Lapinlahti: Stay in Lapinlahti for two turns to rest your nerves.
    • 1.6. Hietsu: If you’re wearing a hat, you won’t get a sunburn. If you’re not wearing any, you get a sunburn and have to skip one turn. 
    • 2.1. Kaivopuisto: If you own a student cap, you lose it and stay looking for it for one turn. 
    • 2.2. Suomenlinna: You get lost in the tunnels of the island for one turn.
    • 2.3. Vallisaari: You get a lift to the shore of your choise. 
    • 2.4. Rautatientori: Travel to the station of your choosing with a train.
    • 2.5. Kauppatori: Wait for three turns or treat your friends some ice cream after the game.
    • 2.6. Katajanokka: You go the casino at Katajanokka. Throw the dice once again for a new location. 
    • 3.1. Hakaniemi: Visit and dine at market hall. Tell everybody else what you “ate”.
    • 3.2. Töölönlahti: Act like a goose. The other players give your performance a grade from one to six. You can move forward according to your grade.
    • 3.3. Seurasaari: Act like a squirrel. If the other players think you aced it, stay where you are. If the performance was not a success, the other players decide where you have to move.
    • 3.4. Stadikka: Invite one player swimming with you. The chosen player moves immediately to Stadikka with you. 
    • 3.5. Linnanmäki: You get trapped to a wormhole at the Milky way. Throw the dice to know what new location you will end up in.
    • 3.6. Dallapenpuisto: You buy a scooter from the thrift store. For the next two turns you can throw the dice twice. 
    • 4.1. Suvilahti: You try skateboarding. Throw the dice to to know if the try-out was successful (even number) or if you fall and have to tend to your wounds for one turn (odd number).
    • 4.2. Mustikkamaa: You get energized from the “edible garden”, throw the dice once again. 
    • 4.3. Itä-Pasila: The inspirational street art of Itä-Pasila gives you a sudden urge to go to paint at Suvilahti. Move there immediately. 
    • 4.4. Käpylä: You get on board to the tram number one. Decide which tram station you get off.
    • 4.5. Pikkukoski: You swim in the river to Arabianranta.
    • 4.6. Viikki: The cows at the pasture go wild and you run away from them. Throw the dice and move backwards according to the  number.
    • 5.1. Pikku Huopalahti: Throw the dice if you have to run to catch a buss (even number) or if you will wait for the next one (odd number). If you run, go forward five steps. If you wait, you lose one turn.
    • 5.2. Alppiruusupuisto: Smell the roses, life is grand.
    • 5.3. Keskuspuisto: You get lost in the park. Throw the dice where you will find a way out and move there: Pikkuhuopalahti (1-2), Itä-Pasila (3-4) or Haltiala (5-6).
    • 5.4. Malminkartano: You stay to run the stairs of Jätemäki. Run once around the gameboard.
    • 5.5. Haltiala: A lamb bites you on the finger. You have to go the Meilahti hospital.
    • 5.6. Jakomäki: You admire the sheeps at Brutski and you get new energy. Throw the dice once again.
    • 6.1. Laajasalo: You take the electric ferry to Hakaniemi.
    • 6.2. Roihuvuori: You stay for on turn to admire the cherry trees.
    • 6.3. Itäkeskus: You’ve reached the far end of Eastern-Helsinki. Move to any location you want. 
    • 6.4. Kontula: Dance three squares forward to the music of Kontula Electronic. 
    • 6.5. Rastila: A caravan gives you ride to Lauttasaari or Jakomäki. 
    • 6.6. Aurinkolahti: You can move normally on your next turn or you can stay at the beach for two turns to wait for a ferry that will give you lift to your chosen beach. 

     

  • Extra rules

    1. You decide to use the city bikes. Throw the dice if there is any left at the station (even number) and you get a new turn. If the station is empty (odd number) you lose your next turn.

    2. You run into your friends and konepaja patio and decide to stay for a refreshing drink. You get out of the encounter when you throw numbers from 1 to 3 on your turn.

    3. Your friend invites you to Kallio to enjoy the summer day. Move to Helsinginkatu. 

    4. Your playmate is lost. Move to your chosen player to help them out. 

    5. Your meeting or a lecture is running long. You’ll have to stay and listen for a one turn.

    6. Finland wins the Eurovision and the whole city is in chaos.Every player throws the dice and gets to a new location. 

    7. You stay for a coffee for one turn.

    8. A lost tourist asks for advice. You stay to help them out for one turn.

    9. You see a horse on the pasture and decide to ride it. Move three steps forward.

    10. Summer rain gets you all wet. Dry out for one turn. 

    11. Thunder suprises you and you have to run to safety. Throw the dice again.

    12. Sun is shining. Go to the rocks at Litsi.

    13. The situation requires some music. Put on the Helsinki Hopping -playlist from Spotify.

    14. Your shoes break apart. Go to Itäkeskus to buy new ones. 

    15. You get a hot air balloon lift. Move four steps to the direction of the wind.

    16. You use a SUP-board to get to Hakaniemi.

    17. You bird watch waterbirds. Name three birds or stay where you are. 

    18. Stay and look for fish at Isoisänsilta for two turns.

    19. Do a pantomime of your favorite animal. If others think it was  a success, stay where you are. If the performance was lacking, they get to decide where you move. 

    20. Traffic at Kehätie is once again jammed. Wait for two turns.
