The roots of Finnish street art and graffiti can be traced back to the mid 80s, when they were popularized in Finland by American media. Art made on the streets has always attracted artists acting on their own accord, often without proper art education. Street art is often unauthorized.
Finnish society has had different attitudes towards street art and graffiti during the past decades. The status of graffiti and street art ranges from being a punishable crime to art suitable for prestigious museums and art galleries. The border between streets and galleries has begun to fade: numerous artists navigate easily between different spaces.
Omin päin, omin luvin – street art and graffiti exhibition brings together important Finnish street artists and graffiti writers. Artworks by a total of 14 different artists exhibit a wide range of styles in graffiti and street art. The exhibition has been curated by Helsinki Urban Art, an association specializing in street art and urban culture.
Neliö-Galleria is one of the oldest private galleries of Northern Finland. As of 2018, the gallery became the only artist-lead gallery in Oulu region. Neliö-Galleria is run by gallerist and artists Kirsi Tervo.
