Today, Tartu is known as the street art capital of Estonia. It all started over ten years ago, when a couple of local teenagers visited Berlin and got obsessed with what they saw: raw, unsanctioned artworks on the streets, free for everyone to see and to add their own. Returning to Tartu, they started planning their first works and also noticed the increasing number of art pieces done by others. The artists started connecting and soon there was a tight-knit community which gave way to renowned artists and street art festival Stencibility.
The exhibition tells the story of small town Robin Hoods who are breaking the law in order to bring art to the streets and make the environment more meaningful and personal. It’s also about the attitude of making the desired change yourself instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you – public space belongs to everyone who uses it!
Tartu street art will cover not only the gallery walls, but also the streets themselves, by the works of k2rte, Stina Leek and GUTFACE. k2rte is an illustrator and graphic designer who experiments with different mediums and formats. k2rte is inspired by psychedelic sci-fi art of the 70s, anime, comics and nature. Stina Leek is a young and furious freelance artist, whose work is recogniseable by its thick and undulating graphic line and bountiful eyeballs. GUTFACE is a low-brow artist fascinated by mythology, symbolism and world history.
