Finland’s biggest student restaurant UniCafe Kaivopiha (Kaivokatu 10 A, Helsinki) was renewed completely in a renovation in summer 2019. The restaurant wanted to highlight its new look with Terhi Ekebom’s mural that covers an entire wall next to the entrance.
UniCafe Kaivopiha is a student restaurant located in the heart of Helsinki. It was renovated in the summer of 2019 and the objective was to express the restaurant’s values, and to create an effortless and attractive setting for eating. In addition to other renovations, UniCafe wanted to have a welcoming yet fresh mural in their restaurant. Artist Terhi Ekebom painted the piece as a custom work.
The mural is named “Puisto”, meaning “a park.” The piece is in line with Ekebom’s signature style: it is delicate yet rich at the same time. The mural’s beautiful palette is the same as the other parts of the restaurant, and its positioning allows admiration from any point in the restaurant. The painting depicts a shared picnic, with which Ekebom wanted to highlight inclusion and the sense of community.
UniCafe’s values include openness – all city dwellers are welcome to their restaurant in Kaivopiha. UniCafe’s serene mural invites everyone for a shared picnic and brings glimpses of luxury into people’s everyday lives.
